Demo has officially started in the bathroom and whew its already been a duzy! I first tackled removing the soffit above the shower. With not much trouble we were able to remove all of drywall and framing. Unfortunately, in the process of removing the last board, Cory’s elbow hit the pipe that connects to our second floor shower and it completely crumbled! While I’m grateful we replaced it prior to finishing our whole renovation – it took an entire day away from demoing the tile and removing the tub.
After plenty of DIY projects, we always expect for detours but this truly was a blessing in disguise! After six trips to Home Depot and many YouTube videos, we now have a working shower.
I then moved onto removing the tile surround – which proved to be more difficult than expected (shocker). After a bit of research and this YouTube video I started working in sections – unfortunately neither way suggested worked with the way our tile was installed so I removed them one by one. I’ve completed one side and will finish the other two this upcoming week.
Additionally, all of the shiplap and trim has been removed from the space (with exception of behind the toilet). *TIP: If you are installing wall trim in your space and you’re unsure if you will change it down the road, DO NOT use any type of adhesive. Using construction adhesive can result in drywall damage when removing and will likely result in replacing wholes sections of your wall.
The larger hole was from the original impact! Clearly it would have been an issue had we not replaced it now!
Next week we will finish the demo and get the space prepped for sheet rock and drywall for the ceiling. We don’t currently have a bathroom exhaust fan. I’m planning on using this video as a guide to (fingers crossed) install one above the future shower area. Our tile delivery from Jeffrey Court is scheduled for tomorrow and I’m so excited to see all of the tile selections together!
