After taking last week off, we were ready to get to work on the built-in’s! When planning out the wall I thought through all options – building everything from scratch or purchasing prebuilt cabinets for the base. With current lumber prices, I opted for these unfinished upper cabinets from Home Depot. Each cabinet ran us $69 a pieces, which would be similar in cost to build and much less work.

We decided on a lower quality piece of wood (1×8 common board) for the base because it will all be hidden behind baseboard and cabinets. First mounting the back board to the wall and then began placing support pieces every 18 inches – making sure to check level as we went.
After building the base, we placed the cabinets and did some math. Each cabinet is 24 inches – we have a total of six, totaling 144 inches. Our wall spans a total of 159 inches, leaving us with 15 additional inches to make up. We opted for 1×3 poplar boards to rip down to size – doing 2 inch boards between each cabinet and then 2.5 inch boards on each end.
To help support the spacers, we added scrap wood behind the lip of the cabinet sides. After adding those pieces, we placed the larger front pieces and drilled them in through the sides.
Next week will include a lot of finishing work on the wall treatment and fingers crossed for building the built-in shelves!
