ITS REVEAL DAY!! After six weeks of demo, tiling, and design we now have a new beautiful bathroom! I’m still in disbelief how drastically its transformed. Every inch of the bathroom has been touched and designed to what it is today! I’ve broken down every detail of the space below and can’t wait to hear what you think. Now lets get into it!
Tile:
Let’s chat about the real hero of this space – THE TILE. In a bathroom space, tile holds the most visual space so it better be beautiful! Jeffrey Court’s Home Depot line of tile has endless options and selections for all styles.
Let’s start with the flooring. Black and white hex tile is timeless – using these larger scale tiles adds a modern twist. After playing around with patterns (so much fun!) we opted for a black border, larger pattern at the front and back of the room and dots along the edges. Continuing the pattern, without a break, into the shower, makes our tiny bathroom feel larger. One of my favorite parts is a little secret – until you open the closet. Check out our last initial tucked away in the linen closet!
Now that beautiful shower! Marble is one of my favorite materials and it feels so timeless. Pair that with a traditional subway shape and you’ve got a winner. I’ve been wanting to use pencil tile in a space and it was perfect to break up the traditional size subway with large marble pieces (stacked vertically of course). Because I wanted the lines to flow around the shower, I incorporated them into the frame of the shower niche. Additionally, we used black grouts at those joint lines so the pencil tiles appear to continue without break.
Sink:
Whenever I renovate a space I like to mix new and old. When it came to the bathroom, I knew I wanted to source items from the 1950’s (the year our home was built). When I came across this aqua, cast iron, console sink on Facebook Marketplace for only $20 I knew it’d be the perfect addition. Aqua was not in the design plan but I’ve seen other DIYer’s reglaze tubs and countertops so figured I’d give it a shot. Here is the kit from Rust-Oleum I used.
I first used a wire brush to knock off all of the rust from underneath. After that was completed, I taped off the edges using FrogTape and used a satin black spray paint to coat the bottom. I think going with a contrasting color underneath makes for a fun design element. Once the bottom was set, I carefully read over the instructions. Let me start by saying the process was relatively easy but even after following the directions to a T, the finish isn’t perfect. It also needs a third coat but requires an additional kit. Ultimately, I may end up having it refinished by a local reglazer but it does for now! I’d rate it a 6/10.
Paint:
We previously had all of the trim, walls, and ceiling painted the same color (SW Agreeable Gray). I quickly grew tired of the tone on tone and wanted to go back to the traditional white trim. I opted for SW Pewter Tankard (satin) for the walls and SW Greek Villa (semi-gloss) for all of the trim and ceiling.
Pewter Tankard is a perfect chameleon color – it leans beige/tan but can read gray or even a tinge green depending on the lighting. White can be a really tricky color – Greek Villa may be a new favorite. It reminds me of the color of foam on your latte. Thankfully Wagner sent me their newest sprayer which made spraying the ceiling shiplap a breeze prior to install!
Shower Door:
Converting from a tub to a shower, we were so excited to have a glass enclosure. We partnered with Basco Shower Doors for this space and can’t believe how beautiful the new glass looks! Due to our dimensions we ordered a custom piece. We love that they’re local to our area but are available across the country.
Basco’s website made it really easy to select our style and all of the details prior to ordering. Terry, an installer came out a few days before placing our order to confirm all measurements. Their online tool narrows down their products as you make your selections. I have all of our selections listed below:
- Inline – this means our glass is all on one plane
- Swinging door – I really love the look of a swinging door vs. a sliding
- Frameless – clean look with no metal frame
- Tresor Knob (chrome) – hardware
- Shower Guard Clear – glass selection
